Until recently travel to Japan was difficult. Those who decided to go to this beautiful country at the other end of the earth had to face an exhausting journey of almost 24 hours filled with layovers. Then along came Turkish Airlines and solved this problem with direct flights to Tokyo. At the end of the Second World War, Tokyo lay in ruins. When the war is mentioned, conversation immediately turns to the atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the horrendous devastation they wrought. But it is forgotten that Tokyo too was almost completely destroyed by fire bombs in 1944 and 1945. Indeed Tokyo, like many cities in Germany, is a city that has risen again from its own ashes.

How could we tour Tokyo and see so many interesting places in the short time we would be there? Some people might think a good tour is the answer. But no Far East tour is going to spend more than 3-4 days in Tokyo or any other place in Japan, whereas Japan is a fascinating country worth an entire trip in itself. Great wealth, and the beauty that goes with it, are in evidence wherever you look.
