A handful of people in carnival costumes are posing for photographers. Only a short time ago there was no one in sight. Shall I queue up for a turn? This is not going to be easy. The light is extremely weak, and the masked figures who are going to pose for us are surrounded by large crowds. This calls for patience and dedication. My turn is coming; my excitement peaks. Before you know it I’ve shot two rolls. All of the same subject, but I make the effort so that everything will be perfect.

A PROCESSION OF MASKED FIGURES
The majestic domes of Saint Mark’s come into view as the fog lifts. Clearly today is going to be a beautiful day. But the sun still has not shown its face. Before long the Doges’ Palace and the huge campanile appear. New groups of masked and costumed people arrive on the square, adding to the commotion. And so the carnival mood gradually begins to permeate Venice. Carnival is a holiday of striking,
