A TRIP ON THE RIVER
The best way to explore the delta is to take one of the motorboats moored under the bridge on the road between Priene and Miletus. Our boat made its way down one branch of the river to the Karaca and Kabahayit lagoons. It was delightful watching the changing scenery as we sailed over the still water reflecting the blue sky and white clouds, and past reed beds on either side. We saw several different species of birds flying, and greeted the occasional angler fishing amongst the reeds. An hour later we reached the lagoons. Local fishermen from the village of Akköy showed us the Kabahayit fishery. The channels linking the lagoons to the sea are closed off by stakes so that the fish which have entered cannot escape. In the fishing season the fishermen remain here for several weeks on end, sleeping in reed huts on the shore.
