Karine is the largest with a surface area of 2000 hectares,
noted for its natural beauty and wildlife. A day or
weekend excursion to Karine is an enjoyable experience
at any time from spring through to autumn. Only in
winter is there little sign of the abundant wildlife
and plant species which come to life again in spring.
To reach Karine, take the Priene road from Söke,
and after 20 kilometres take the right turn to Tuzburgazi.
Eight kilometres later, after passing Tuzburgazi and
Doganbey, you reach the lagoon. The road winds along
the shore offering beautiful views of the lagoon,
and ends at a restaurant where you can feast on fish
while watching the fishermen digging for bait in the
shallows and casting their nets for mullet, sea bass
and gilthead bream. Then you can enjoy a walk along
the shore before returning home, perhaps in the direction
of the small fishing harbour, where more fishermen
are busy cleaning the boats, mending nets, and preparing
bait.
