The modern face of Barcelona is in sharp contrast to the
tranquil old-fashioned atmosphere of Uçhisar,
Ürgüp, Göreme and Sinasos. Because
this is the Barcelona of Gaudi’s, Picasso’s
and Miro’s ‘volcanic' creativity. So welcome
to the energetic, lively capital of creative imagination,
modern architecture, painting, music, and, of course,
tourism.
GAUDI'S BARCELONA
Barcelona was founded in the 3rd century BC, but
settlement here dates back four thousand years.
Barcino, as it was originally called, was ruled
in turn by the Romans, Visigoths, Arabs, Franks
and Aragons, all of whom made their contribution
to its rich cultural legacy. Perhaps this is why
Barcelona is Spain's most cosmopolitan city, both
culturally and architecturally. The city was one
of those which put up the fiercest opposition to
the Franco regime in the 1930s, so it is also known
as a place of political activism. The individual
who did most to shape the appearance of modern Barcelona
is Antoni Gaudi.
